Patient Participation in Pro Re Nata Medication in Forensic Psychiatric Care: Interview Study with Patients and Nurses

Pro re nata (PRN, as-needed) medication is commonly used in forensic psychiatric inpatient care, but little known about the participation of patients its prescription and administration. This study describes patient PRN treatment care. Data were collected during interviews with 34 inpatients 19 registered nurses a Finnish hospital. The data underwent inductive content analysis. We found that was related to patients’ individual needs health conditions, use involved private decisions made social context ward. an integrated part daily it three stakeholders, namely patients, nurses, physicians; however, role this collaboration undefined. administration events for multiform, depended on level agreement between need PRN. In future, more attention should be paid how motivate provide them equal opportunities planning PRN, optimize shared decision making so expertise both utilized evaluation
